THE SINGAPORE BASE.

WILL AMERICA USE IT 1 MR. CHAMBERLAIN'S ANSWER. (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 18. In the House of Commons, asked whether any kind of understanding existed between the American and British na\*al authorities, and whether the possibility of America's use of the proposed naval base at Singapore had ever been discussed. Mr. Austen Chamberlain replied that the answer to the second part of the question was plainly in the ' negative. He was not sure whether he understood the first part, so confined himself to saving that so far as he knew there was not. He hoped there would never be any misunderstanding between the ' British and American authorities.—(A. j and N.Z. Cable.)
