SUBMERGED LOADLINE.

STEAMER'S' CAPTAIN FINED. Captain G. A. Bergman, master of the steamer Halo, appeared before Mr. C R. Orr-Walker, 8.M., at Wellington on Tuesday, on a charge of bringing a vessel into Wellington so loaded as to submerge in salt water the centre of the disc°indicating the loadline contrary to the Shipping and Seamen's Act, 1908, and its amendments. The facts of the case were that the vessel arrived in the harbour on Monday afternoon with the loadline submerged over 20 inches. Mr. H. F- O'Leary, who appeared for defendant, pointed out that the master of the vessel had not been in Wellington before, and that the maximum penalty of £100 should not be imposed under the circumstances. The Halo was on her first visit. Recently another vessel had arrived here, but no prosecution was taken for a similar breach ,of the regulations. ' . The magistrate said that the laws of New Zealand had to be obeyed by all vessels entering the ports and imposed a fine of £25, and costs.
