FAMILY TRAGEDY.

THIRD CHILD BADLY ILL. CKRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The third and only surviving child: of Mr. B. B. Wood, who is prominent in Christchurch business, athletic and sporting circles, a boy, two and a half years old, is isolated in the Christchurch Hospital. He is believed to be a positive case of infantile paralysis, and is dangerously ill.

The eldest' boy. of the family, aged nine years, died suddenly on Sunday, and the second boy, aged seven, succumbed to-day in the Christchurch Hospital to an attack of infantile paralysis, after a very brief illness.

Mr. Wood, who in the past was one of New Zealand's foremost golfers, is a son-in-law of Sir Joseph Ward.

CHILD'S SUDDEN" DEATH. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. Word was received from Wliangamata this morning 'by the police to the efl'eet that Clara, the three-year-old daughter of Thomas Douglas, farmer, of Wliangamata, died suddenly last night. The child . had been suffering from a cold. The cause of death is unknown. The coroner (Mr. Wallnutt), Dr. Cole and Sergeant McLean will proceed to Whangamata to-morrow to investigate.

EPIDEMICS IN GENERAL. LAST YEAR UNEVENTFUL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Assistant Director-General of Health, Dr. 11. H. Watt, reviewing the year's progress in regard to the health of the community, stated that but for the present epidemic of infantile paralysis, which commenced in November of last year, 1924 was uneventful so far as the incidence of infectious diseases was concerned. Returns for the twelve months ended December 31, 1924, were: (Figures for 1923 in parentheses) Scarlet fever, 1178 (1201); dinhtheria. 2722 (1951); tuberculosis. 1072 (1002); nneumonie influenza, IS2 (1144); pneumonia, 759 (788).
