EARTHQUAKE IN CANADA.

DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.

WIDESPREAD CONSTERNATION.

MONTREAL, March 3

Earthquake shocks were experienced in Canada on Saturday evening which alarmed thousands of people. The tremors have not yet altogether abated. Keports from outlying districts show that greater damage was done than was at first thought. They seem to establish the fact that the centre of the Canadian disturbances was Sagucnay Kiver district, in Quebec.

Old , Jesuit histories record a series ol earthquakes in much the same district which, lasted for six months. This was in 1663. Those disturbances flung up the present- towering hills in the- Sague-' nay district almost instantly.

It is said that earthquakes similar to those of 1663 might demolish Montreal. The result of the present series of Blocks bo far as is known at present include the deaths of '.->-o women. The Catholic Church at St. llilarion, Quebec, one of the finest edifices m Canada, was destroyed.

The telephones have been cut off in •ome districts.—(Reuter.)
