LOCAL BODIES.

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. W. E. Richardson) presided, and Councillors J. B. Tonar, F. O. Devlin, A. (Parrish, A. W. Smith, W. C. Smith, O. R. Brinsden, Chas. Hunter and W. Klnley were also present.

Basement Apartments.—Communications were received from the owners of two houses recently reported as not complying with the building by-laws In respect to living rooms In the basements. The council referred the applicants to the Health Department.

Footpaths.—The foreman .of works, Mr. George Davison, reported that tarring and sanding of footpaths included both sides of Princes Street (from Beach Koad to King Street) and the south side of Onewa Road (from Church Street to Collier's Hill). The '"clean up" resulted In six loads of rubbish being removed to the tip. This was covered with earth. The formation of the footpath on the western side of Clarence Street was urced by ratepayers interested. Ratepayers of the southern end of Richmond Avenue requested the extension of the tarred and sanded footpath.

Abattoir.—Acceding to a request for further information as to the benefits the Xortheote Borough would receive by being made part of fhe Auckland abattoir district, the City Council Markets Committee drew attention to the provisions of the Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 190 S. Section 5 cast upon the local authority, where the population was not less than 2000, the duty of maintaining an abattoir for the purposes of such district. Cnder section 15 an abattoir established by one local authority may be made available for the purpose of another local authority on terms agreed on. As the population of Northeote was over 2000 it would appear to be the duty of that council to consider the position with a view to complying with the Act. The borough, therefore, might well take advantage of the facilities offered by the City Council's abattoir already established at Westfleld. The borough would be ensured of a pure meat sjipply for its inhabitants, as all meat sold in the borough would require to be killed at the abattoir under the hygienic conditions there provided, and be "subject to the rigid inspection by the Government meat inspectors.

Drainage Loan.—The town clerk stated that a £5000 loan had been approved by the State Advances Department for drainage. Overdraft arrangements had been made in the meantime to pay the contractors.
