OBITUARY.
DEATH OF OLD COLONIST
MRS. HANNAH HOTCHIN.
The death of Mrs. Hannah Hotchin on Tuesday last at the residence of her son in Chester Avenue, Grey Lynn, removes a colonist of nearly sixty years" standing. Mrs. Hotehin (then Mrs. Henry Kendall) came out to Auckland 59 years ago in the John Templeton and settled at Matekana, where she had many exciting and trying experiences during the Maori wars. On one occasion a Maori chief rode through the central passageway of her house on a white horse followed by his two hundred dusky -warriors. In the early seventies Mr. Kendall went with her husband to Thames, and later removed to Norfolk Island during Bishop G. A. Selwyn's time in the service of the Melanesian Mission. At Norfolk Island Mr.- Kendall was left a widow with six children, and came back to Auckland in 1879. Soon afterwards she married Mr. George William Hotchin and lived at Parnell until taking up her residence at Freeman's Bay, where she remained for thirty years. Mrs. Hotchin retained all her faculties to the end and passed away quietly. She was in her eightieth year. The interment took place at Waikumete cemetery. Deceased is survived by her husband and by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. J. K. Mathieson (Papatoetoe), Mrs. Jas. Tapper (Epsom), Mrs. Martin Lawson (Ponsonby), Mr. William Kendall (Sydney), Mr. Charles Kendall (Parnell), Messrs. Lewis and Roy Hotchin (Ponsonby), Mr. Herbert Hotchin (Grey Lynn), and Captain Frank Hotchin. There aTe 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
