DIOMEDE FOH NEW ZEALAND. SISTER SHIP TO DUNEDIN. FINE TYPE OF CRUISER. (By Telegraph.-Own Correspondent > WELUNOTON, this day. The Government hag decided to accept the offer of the British Government of a second light cruiser for Nexv Zealand, and the Imperial naval authorities xvill accordingly commission H.M.s. Diomede. The cruiser is a sister ship to H.M.s. I Dunedin, noxv the Nexv Zealand flagI ship, and it is.expected she will be comI missioned about October. j 1 This announcement is, of course, not unexpected, as the Prime Minister made it clear to Parliament last session that, New Zealand should undertake the responsibility for the maintenance of the second cruiser, in view of its extended j responsibilities in the Pacific and the gen-1 oral obligation of the Dominion to under-' take a fair share of the expense of naval defence. Parliament, in anticipation of tlie arrival of the second oil-burning cruiser, passed a vote of £16,000 for the I hire and upkeep of the oil carrier | Nucula. which is being provided by the ; Admiralty to furnish oil supplies to the New Zealand station, and further votes xvere passed to complete the work in I hand at Devonport of erecting txvo fuel | , oil tanks. Parliament approved of the ; £100,000 vote formerly passed as a con-1 ' tribution toxx-ards the Singapore base j being applied for the maintenance of the second oil-burning cruiser on the. New , I Zealand station. !
