HEARTWATER GERM.

AMERICAN'S DISCOVERT. PRETORIA, January 22. It is authoritatively stated that Dr. Cowdray, of tho Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York, who was sent to South Africa at the invitation of the South African Government, has found the micro-organism causing the disease known as heartwater in sheep, goats and cattle.

The micro-organism resembles closely, but is not identical with, other parasites causing typhus fever, trench fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Japanese river sickness in man.

Sir Arnold Theiler, Director of Veterinary Research, regards the discovery aa one of the most important ever made in regard to cattle disease in South Africa.

Heartwater is a febrile disease transmitted by ticks. Infection is characterised by inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth, with catarrhal discharge from the nostrils, followed by soreness of the feet. It is often fatal, especially to young animals.
