ASSAULT ALLEGED.

MAN REMANDED. CUSTOMS STREET INCIDENT. In the Police Court this morning Robert Wiffen, aged 50, -was remanded till Wednesday on a charge of assaulting John Bailey, who is at present lying in a semi-conscious condition in the Auckland Hospital. The charge follows on an affair in Customs Street on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. Bailey, just after he had left an hotel, fell to the ground and struck his head on the kerb, suffering severe injuries. It is alleged by witnesses that the injured man was either struck or pushed. Tho police then made an arrest. This morning Mr. Singer appeared for Wiffen. The Chief-Detective, in asking the presiding justices for a remand, asked that the question of bail be reserved until Wednesday, when it will be known how Bailey is progressing. This was agreed to.
