STATE FISHERIES.
NEW APPOINTMENT MADE. NOTED ENGLISH EXPERT. Mr. A. E. Hefford, M.Sc. (Wales) who has been appointed to the position of fisheries expert to the New Zealand Government, at a salary of £750 per annum, and was selected by the Public Service Commissioner from a large number of applications received from New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, is a noted English expert in fisheries culture and research. Since 1916 he has been naturalist on the scientific staff of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, engaged in North Sea investigations and later in inshore (shell-fish) and freshwater work. Since 1923, he has been in charge of the fresh-water fisheries' experimental station at Alresford (Hants). From 1905 to 1908 he was assistant naturalist to the Marine Biological Association for International Fisheries Investigation in the North Sea. From 1908 to miO he was fisheries naturalist on the staff of the Plymouth Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association. From 1916 to 1920 he was acting-dis-trict inspector for the North-East Coast. From 1920 to 1924 he was loaned to the Government of Bombay a« marine biologist for trawling survey.
