PLENTY OF GOLD.

Sir.—l was pleased to see in the | 'Star' , the above rPinarks made by an | old miner. It is quite true as far as the back hills are concerned, yet most of the ground close to tlie towns has been well prospected, and those miners who have the will have not the means to prospect the back ranges, while nothing but the striking of a big patch I will induce Aucklandcrs to invest in I mining. The same may be said of I the Thames, where they now look to butter and cheese for their sold returns. From my long experience in gold mining I feel sure there is great wealth in the reef system of the hack ranges known as Punga Flat, which, on the seaward trend in the early days, yielded up hundreds of thousands in Rold. But nothing can be done without capital, which, as in the past, is waiting for the poor-man prospector to strike it first.—l am, etc., H. J. GEXTLES.
