ILLICIT LIQUOR BUSINESS.

HON. GEO. FOWLDS' COMPARISON.

In the opinion of the Hon. George Fowlds there is more illicit liquor sold per head of the population in New Zealand than in the United States of America, the country certain propaganda tried to make out was "rampant with boot-legging." Mr. Fowlds made this remarkable statement this afternoon at a largely-attended lunch given to welcome him. back. by the Auckland area of the New Zealand Alliance.

Mr. Fowlds said the reports of bootlegging in the States were greatly exaggerated. The amount made locally was small. The British were the chief sinners in regard to the smuggled liquor, but even if every drop that left Great Britain for places from which it was at all likely that it could be smuggled into the States, the amount going into the States would be infinitesimal as compared with the quantity that' went into the country before prohibition. He had seen the country before and during prohibition, and he was' convinced that it was more prosperous and better off now than under license.
