NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

HOME PRESS COMMENT. Th re are many notable references in the English and Scottish newspapers to the new Governor-General; all receive the appointment with pleasure, although the Conservative party regret the loss they will sustain in the political arena.

"I heard it stated," says the London "Evening News," "that the appointment of General Sir Charles Fergusson must have been somewhat unexpected, for when the general was oUr first military governor of Cologne he laid- down the law pretty bluntly to some members of the Labour party who were visiting there, explaining to them that he was pleased to welcome them if they obeyed the regulations he had introduced, but if if they did not conform he would prefer them to leave the district. All tho same, what really happened was that the general's firm attitude gained the respect of these Labourites."

"The work of the Church was always to him of the greatest importance," said the "British Weekly." "He i 3 a wellknown figure at the Presbyterian Assemblies." An interesting point is his long association with Mr. James Brown, M.P., this year's High Commissioner for the Church of Scotland. The two are great personal friends, and when they found themselves opposing each other at the general election last year Mr. Brown's victory and Sir Charles' defeat did nothing to disturb that friendship. It is indeed to be inferred that in thus honouring Sir Charles Fergusson the Government has to some extent been guided by tlie recommendation of Mr. Brown.

"Mr. Brown has received some of the congratulations offered on the appointment," says the "Daily Mirror." "Mr. Brown is Labour member for South Ayrshire, and Sir Charle3 Fergusson has devoted practically all his time since tlie beginning of tbe year to a canvass of that constituency with a view to contesting it at the next general election."
