LIGHTING THE TRAM ROUTES

A UNIFORM SYSTEM. The question of lighting theManukau Road was the subject of' correspondence between the Works Committee of the Auckland City Council and the Mount Roskill Road Board last night. The committee wants to negotiate with the board with regard to tile lighting of the roads along which the trams run, ■with a view to the adoption, if possible, lof a uniform lighting fitting. For the board's information, the committee stated that the lighting fitting decided J upon by the City Council is similar to j those at the top of Khyber Pass, which represents the most economical and efficient lighting unit so far manufactured. This unit is now being installed on the Great North Road, from the Reservoir to the Zoological Gardens, and the committee anticipates that the Power Board will have completed the 'work by the end of this month, when it will be able to be inspected. The chairman, Mr. G. E. Tansley. said the improved lighting system was' desirable if the board could 'afford the extra cost. Mount Roskill was responsible for half the lighting of Manukau Road, from Greenwood's Corner to the Royal Oak, a distance of about a mile. One Tree Hill Board was responsible for the other half. The cost to the two authorities would be about £200 per annum. The present gas lamps cost the two boards about £05 a year. Members generallyagreed that the board should adopt the improved- lighting system if One Tree Hill Road Board would do the same. It was decided to defer consideration for a fortnight, and in the meantime to seek a conference on the subject with the One Tree Hill Road Board.
