WELCOMING TOURISTS.

AUCKLAND'S APATHY. BETTER METHODS NEEDED. "OCCULT"' TOUKIST OFFICE. The tariff at New Zealand hotels and boarding-houses is one of the few things which, in the eyes of a tourist, looms favourably. The fact ■reas testified to at a conference this morning dealing with tourist traffic. One speaker, who had been several times round the globe, stated that nowhere in the world was better fare and accommodation provided for the money than in New Zealand. What was sadly lacking was the reception of guests. They were allowed to stand about, ignored by proprietors and attendants, at the latters' pleasure. Adverting to this matter, another speaker said that visitors should be met at the «hips, in the stream if possible, by an individual who had full information of accommodation and all resorts, and could give particulars of travelling facilities and any other information which was required. When the establishment of a bureau at the wharf, where information could be disseminated, was urged, Mr. Wallnutt, representing the Tourist Department in Auckland, said that this very information was available at the office in Queen Street. '•Yes," retorted the chairman, "we appreciate the fact that the information is available, but not five per cent of our visitors ever get there—they cannot find it."
