UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL

TRIBUTE TO LATE DR. LETS. THE SCHOOL OF FORESTRY. The University College Council met yesterday, when tlie following were present: The president (the Hon. George Fowlds), Professors C. Egerton, H. W. Segar, H. W. J. Mahon, A. P. W. Thomas, and Messrs. K. Mackenzie, (.'. Rhodes. G. H. Wilson, M. Caughey, T. V. Wells, A. Harris. The president, in paying a tribute of respect to the memory of the late Dr. T. W. Leys, said that his death meant a loss to the citizens of Auckland. His record of valuable service was a very long one. Dr. Leys was a many-sided man, and whatever he took up he always put a great amount of ability and energy into his work. His activities to the College in no way differed from his other activities, and he did a great deal to improve the administration of the College. Dr. Leys' sole aim and object was the welfare of the Auckland University, said Mr. Fowlds, and his place in the community would never be filled. A motion was then carried recording the Council's appreciation of Dr. Leys' services, and conveying sympathy to his widow and family. The president was welcomed after his visit to Canada and the United States, also Mr. M. Caughey. who has just returned from a trip to England. The trustees, in the estate of the late Sir John Logan Campbell forwarded a cheque for £20,000 and a trust deed for signature. The matter was left to the Finance Committee. A letter was received from the Director of. Education intimating that Cabinet had approved of an annual grant of £1000 to the College for forestry, with an additional grant of £600 for plant and material; also that a similar prrant has 'been made to the Canterbury College. The MinUter of Education notified tho Council that Cabinet had increased the total Dominion grant to the Workers' Educational Association by £1000 this year.
