• BREACH OF THE I,AW. (P.j- TelPßHipli.—Press Associations PALMERSTOX NORTH, this day. In the Magistrate's Court, when Arthur ChotP was charged with having carried on business ns a bookmaker. Detective Sergeant Quirke said there wa.* no suggestion that, defendant, was a regular bookmaker. He wns a bricklayer by trade. Defendant was a poor man, and the bookmaking charge arose out of a betting transaction carried on in connection with a recent boxing contest at I'ulmerston. Counsel for defendant said his client conducted a bc.cing gymnasium, and discovered a boxer whom he considered a "dark , hor.se." He had bet on his chances; others \v?;nted to do the same, and defendant took their money, believing he was simply acting as stakeholder. Unfortunately he had taken commissions, which brought him under the Act. A fiiitt of £3 and costs was imposed.
