THE BRITISH ELECTIONS.

(To the Editor.) ! I Sir, —In your issue of 20th September j you were good enough to publish a j I letter in which I discussed the political ! I situation in Britain, and advanced the ! opinion, in opposition to that of Lord . Kothermere (who thought the Liberal ] party would disappear at next election), j that the outcome would be "Exit 1 Labour—in disgrace"; further, that the ,' Liberal star would be in the ascendant. ! The disgrace and the exit have come I sooner than I anticipated. The Liberals, too, show cheering signs of unity and vitality. On the vote of censure that turned out the Government they completely out-manoeuvred the Conservatives, who were, as it were, dragged at the chariot wheels of the Liberals. By their tactics, the Liberals have placed themselves in a position of vantage | before the electors, and have apparently qualified ftemsclves for being called upon to form a ministry if the elections should result indecisively. Liberalism is beyond doubt the political creed of I the majority of Britishers, and it is I now offering them freedom and progress, with security, provided a few ! Conservatives help to swell their ranks. j There is always a large proportion of I electors who 'chance sides between one j election and another, and for several reasons it seems clear many will now return to the Liberal faith and fold. I The bungled and confused foreign policy |of the Government, their failures in i domestic and Imperial affairs, conjoined With the matter of the baronetcy following the gift of £30.000 . i and the abandoned prosecution |of a sedition-monger, will mii fiuence many working men and women. i Already it is shown, Labour hopes to : win tlie election by mingled promises ! and threats. They promise everything 'i to the worker, and at least one of their ' I number has held out the threat that if 1 Labour is not returned to power there will be a revolution in England. We ■ shall see how the electors react to this brimstone and ; am, etc., J- LIDDELL KELLY.
