The Demand for Coal and the Need for Further Collieries. Mr. Guthrie. when Minister of Mines, stated in the House: "Tor the last 25 years it has been impossible to get in New Zealand a sufficient quantity of coal to meet the requirements of the Department and industries: consequently importations have had to be made. These importations have generally been kept down to the very lowest levels." The Hon J. G. Coates, in the House this year (August 20th), stated: "The difficulty in the past, however, has been that the New Zealand Mines have not been able to give the Department supplies of sufficient quantity and with sufficient regularity to enable the Department to carry on its business without the importation of further supplies from abroad. It is not to be overlooked that the production of coal in New Zealand has never been sufficient for all the requirements of the Dominion. If, therefore, the Railway Department took from New Zealand Mines all the coal it required, other industries, such as the dairy factories, gas companies, freezing works, etc., and the household trade, would find themselves in short supply from the local jnines." On July 9th, 1924, the "New Zealand Herald" stated: "Coal supplies are somewhat limited, barely sufficient to keep pace with the demand. Large quantities have been imported for the railways and for steam purposes in general, on account of the difficulty in getting sufficient supplies from Westport and the Waikato." Coal imports into New Zealand 1911 to 1914, averaged .. .. 302,000 tons per year 1914 to 1918. „ .... 342.000 1921 imports were .. ~.. 822,458 1922 „ .. .... 501,478 1923 .. ~ .... 690,000 1924 (7 months" returns), £495,576. against £189,414 for same period last year—increase, £306,162 in seven months. The Hon. C. J. Anderson, Minister of Mines, referring to these importations, made the following statement in the House (September 15th. 1924):— "These importations would never have been necessary if it had been possible to make arrangements in New Zealand for the forward delivery of the large quantities of coal required, not only for the The Prime Minister, Mr. Massey, stated in the House (August 14th. 1924): "We are sending very large sums to Australia for coal. As I have said before, it is no credit to us that we should have to import coal into this country, even in small quantities." Had the above coal been procurable from New Zealand mines, five further mines could have been fully employed, and the money retained within the Dominion. ONE COMPANY, ON ISSUING ITS BALANCE SHEET IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR, STATED: "THE OUTPUT OF THE MINE IS TWENTY THOUSAND TONS IN EXCESS OF LAST YEAR, NOTWITHSTANDING WHICH THE DEMAND FOR THE COMPANY'S COAL IS UNSATISFIED." !
