Jones, the lightweight apprentice in T. George's stable, was in good form at Whangarel on Thursday, winning two events on Gold Jacket and Winkle's Wheel respectively, and llnlshlng second In another race on Winkle's Wheel. Lady Rewa was prominent ror six furlongs in the Parahakl Handicap at Whangarel on Thursday being with Cool Stimulants up to thl.i point. At the last hurdle Tom Moore outjurnpßd Te Tahl and Scottish Knight, and, going on, beat the lvrmer by four lengths. three events at Whangarel on Thursday— Cawnpore, Sandstar and Cool stimulants. Praiseworthy, who also comes from the other side, and Lapidary, Imported from England, filled minor places In the events In which they were engaged. Winkle's Wheel, owned by Mr. J. T. Young, Ellerslle, put up a couple of good performances at Whangarei on Thursday when she finished second to Sandstar tn the Kensington Handicap, and later In the day won the Hlkurangl Hank Handicap rrom Tactitlan. Mr. Young has not had a great deal of luck since coming to Auckland last season, and the success the marc met with did not come out of Us turn. Cool Stimulants Is back to form again Judging by the manner In which he won the concluding event at Whangarei on Thursday. He hopped out smartly and with I.arly Rewa led the field to the home bend where he drew out and won well rrom Te Kurt, who, under pressure, got up to beat Lapidary ror second honours. This Is his llrst success since he won a mile event at Hie Walpa meeting last December. He was always well placed and when It came to the business end he drew out to win nicely by a couple of lengths In the good time or 2.20 4-5. Gold Jacket Is pretty well Just now and may be hard to dispose of In some other pvont before the spring fixtures are concluded. Beautiful weather favoured the Whangaret Racing Club for the opening of their spring meeting on Thursday and In consequence there was a large attendance. The meeting was excellently managed by the president, Mr. R. G. Hosking. and the omclals, and the newly appointed secretary, Mr. L. G. Hill had all the arrangements in excellent order and everything worked smoothly throughout. That the fixture opened well Is Indicated by the large increase in the toiallsator the sum bandied being £5310 in excess of the receipts for the corresponding day last year. The gate returns were also in advance, and given fliw weather to-day the club will have good cause to congratulate Itself on the success of the gathering. Cawnpore. owned by Mr. E. W. Cawnpore was taken to Australia during the winter to gel the benefit or the tracks over there. He was not raced on the other side, and since his return has only started on one previous occasion, when ho was unplaced at the i Pakuranga Hunt Club's Meeting. The going was heavy on that occasion, but on Thursday it was nice and llrm. ana he was suited by the conditions. He gallops resolutely, and should prove useful In more select company. Sandstar, which wa3 sola recently by Messrs. R. G. Hosking and L. W. >cl=on to Mr Wenzl Scholium, registered his llrst victory at Whangarel on Thursday, when he won the Kensington Handicap. Two New Zealand-bred horses in The Hawk and The Monk are engaged In the Caulfleld Cup, which is being decided today, and of the pair the flrstnamed is regarded as having the best prospects. Horses bred in the Dominion have of late years rreely competed In the big handicap at Caulflcld, and on five ccasions they have supplied the ravourite. In 1904 Gladsome, a brilliant mare, which had proved herself capable of winning at weight-ror-age amongst the best in Australia, was looked upon as having a great chance, and sumdent support was accorded her to send her out favourite. She failed badly, and was never In the picture. Four years lat*r another New Zealander in Plnk-'Un was regarded as a certainty, and started a short-priced favourite, but weight of money did not assist him, and the best he could do was finish eighth. In 1011 that good mare Lady Medallist held pride of position In the betting, ana she won, this marking the llrst victory In the Caulfleld Cup for a New Zealand-bred one. In 1914 Anna Carlovna let her supporters down badly when she finished in the ruck, and last year The Cypher was sent out ravourite.
