-"DTt-JC NOTICES. TTABOLD And DIVERS RATEPAYERS* APPEAL to OTHER RATEPAYERS (AT 7/ AN INCH). fpHE QIVIC gQUARE. TAMMANYISM means the Control of the Election of a Mayor or Council by a Coterie or Clique. INTRODUCTION. When the Council desires to spend money above a certain amount they have first ii> ask the ratepayers if they consent t-i foot the bill, but, nevertheless, the Council can WITHOUT CONSULTING- the ratepayers destroy any municipal-owned buildings THEY please—even the Town Hall—hence they did not bother about a poll when they destroyed a score of buildings at the foot of Wellesley Street. Until the Empowering Bill becomes law—already nearly passed— they have to ask ratepayers' consent before they can TRAFFIC IN LAND SPECS. WITH THE RATEPAYERS' MONEY. Soon the Empowering Bill will relieve them of this bother, and they can speculate with the ratepayers' money as their righteous wisdom guides them. Surely. Ratepayers, Isn't it time you woke up and removed both Government and Council for playing you such a trick? After our City Council lost the poll on the City Market site, they angrily puUed down all those rent-produc-ing shops, SPENT THE RATEPAYERS' MONEY LAVISHLY IN BIG COMPENSATIONS, and made the corner of Queen and Wellesley Streets the COSTLY DESOLATE WASTE you see it to-day. The idea In wasting our public funds and buildings in this manner was, many think, so that ratepayers would then have no alternative but vo»» in favour of their Civic Square proposal. NOW THE COUNCIL IS MISTAKEN THERE, for. although this de.olate waste must agalu be built upon, many think this valuable site' could be best used for REVENUE-PRODUCING PREMISES. Criticism of the Council's extravagance has already proved a good thing for the ratepayers, for the Council, after announcing in the Press that a Six Hundred Thousand street loan was necessary, made the startling eleventh-hour discovery that it was both unnecessary and unfair to the Ratepayers, so the Ratepav'ers saved a paltry £600,000. (See Daily Press.) By voting against the Mayor's Civic Square proposal. Ratepayers will simultaneously vote NO CONFiIDENCE.in the Council's policy, and when a new Council is elected the proposal to build revenue-producing premises could then be carried. CONTEXT. POWERFUL INFLUENCES and keen minds are out to gain votes for the Civic Scheme, and Induce Ratepayers to weakly recant their own mandate of the last Poll. REMEMBER that the Mayor and Council, after you voted against the last proposal, stultified your vote by pulling the buildings down, and now ask your endorsement of their AUTOCRATIC ACTION. IF ELECTOR, you had 4_ acres of land in Queen Street, and you were ALREADY LIVING ABOVE YOUR INCOME and BORROWING MONEY CONSTANTLY, as the City Council ARE NOW DOING, would you make this land a NON - PRODUCING PARKY SQUARE.. or use it to SUPPLEMENT YOUR INCOME? ELECTOR, that 41 acres is worth £1000 a foot, and the income obtainable therefrom could REDUCE YOUR. RATES or build a CONCRETE .TRACK TO THE COAST, and BUY 5000 ACRES there, and leave sufficient to provide FREE transit to the Coast camping grounds during your holidays. ELECTOR, upon that 4i acres the Mayor and Councillors can suggest nothing better than to build a NON-PRODUCTIVE SQUARE for MUNICIPAL OFFICES and a CITY THEATRE, NEITHER of which is wanted at all. THEN YOU WONDER why the Town Hall's foundations were made to take another five stories, which could house all the Council's requirements, and why they are not used, and why the Council should BUTT IN AGAINST PRIVATE ENTERPRISE, which is ALREADY PROVIDING AMPLE THEATRES IN AUCKLAND. THE CITY'S TRADING VENTURE IN FISH cost ratepayers thousands upon thousands of pounds, and now the Empowering Bill will give the Council more power to traffic in lands. WE SUGGEST THAT the council already has more power than is good for YOU. IF YOU BELIEVE the Council should confine their attention to good reads, and the judicious spending of Ratepayers' -money, vote against the Square. And, should the Council resign, MANY WORTHY CITIZENS will come forward and offer their services. In conclusion,, the Empowering BUI just passed gives the Council the right to issue City Debentures GALORE, the security of these to be on your own property—don't forget, YOUR PROPERTY. Ratepayers, whenever are you going to awaken from your trance-like sleep? 304 HA- W X S' FEET.
