WOMEN WITH BLACKS.
[DOUGLAS MAWSON TRAGEDY. STORIES OF ABORIGINALS. BOKHARA AND MAJARA. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 1.30 p.m.) I SYDNEY, this day. A report from Captain Wilkins, who is leading a private party in an attempt to rescue the survivors of tbe ship Douglas Mawson, states that he questioned natives on Cunningham Island, who said they had heard of two white women who were now on the mainland. One of them and a white girl child were now living in the camp of a man named Bokhara. The other is held by a man named Majara. The natives said the women bad made an attempt to get in touch with a passing vessel last year, but the captors threatened to spear them if they made any further effort to escape. Constable Green, now at Catherine Island, states he searched tlie Gulf of Carpentaria for wreckage of the Douglas Mawson last year, and collected information from the natives which included a reference to two women survivors . from the wreck, who were then with the blacks. This information was reported to private official circles, but without any further result or real investigation. It wa's !' thought by the people concerned to*"be false, and no action was taken. —(A. and NX Cable.)
