PURDY IN IRELAND.

TAILTEANN GAMES SUCCESS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) DUBLIN, August in. Charles Purely, the 18-jear-old Auckland amateur boxer, has made amends for his defeat at Paris by a great victory in the Tailteann games at Dui/iin. This festival, in which Irishmen and men of Irish descent from England. Wales, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, U.S.A.. and New Zealand took part has attracted great crowda for the athletic, literary, and musical competitions. Purdy was unable to make his usual weight, and was therefore forced to take on the welter-weight class. In the semi-finals he met x O"llanraham, considered to be the best amateur welter in England. Conceding him height, reach and weight, Purdy defeated him in what the "Kreeraan's Journal" declared to be the best fight of the tournament to date. Remark was made, after stv.ng how well lie employed his left, that he was obviously a "kithogue." In the final he was opposed to O'Lhvyer, welter-weight champion .of Ireland, who had reached the semifinals at Paris. It was considered lie would extend the AuckJander, but such failed to be the case. Purdy outpointed hia man in every round, scoring with lefts and rights to face and holly, and secured a comfortable win. It may be safely said that Purdy was the most scientific boxer seen at the whole tournament—and the most popular with the crowd.
