BOWLER TAKES POISON. DIES IN HOSPITAL. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.i'l CHRISTCHUKCH, this day. Alfred Walker, who drank poison at ■ the bowling pavilion at Heathcote on Tuesday last, died in hospital this morn- j ing. How he came to poison himself is a sad story—a joke that went wrong. , During the afternoon three men were engaged in a working' bee at the Heath- ' cote Bowling Club's greens, and a gallon '■ bottle of weed killer was standing on a table. ;When Mr. Walker came in he went to the table, lifted the bottle to his lips, and Eaid: "Here's a go, boys!" Apparently he intended his action as a joke. But he must have underestimated the quantity of liquor in the bottle, and he was unable t<s prevent himself swallowing a mouthful. The bottle was ' marked "Poison," and Mr. Walker had been told to be careful. Immediately after swallowing the liquid he fell on the floor in pain. He was given an emetic and taken to the hospital.
