CHESS.
END OF MR. KOSTTCSTS TOUR, Mr. Boris Kostich, the first chess master to visit the Dominion, concludes his historic tour of New Zealand this evening, when he is to play a simultaneous match against all comers at His 'Majesty's Arcade. It is hoped to have at least 40 boards engaged. Mr. Kostich, since landing in Wellington eight weeks ago, has done much to awaken interest in the game in iffie various centres thafc»he has visited, and by means of lectures, blindfold play and simultaneous displays to raise the standard of New Zealand chess. His record in New Zealand is as follows: played 441 games, won 374, drawn 59, and lost eight. This includes his five blindfold performances, in which his tally is 28 wins and 2 draws. A record attendance is expected this evening, as it will be the last opportunity of seeing- Mr. Kostich in action. He leaves for Sydney to-morrow to complete his Australian engagements, prior to visiting the various chess centres of South Africa. AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. Play in the annual 20-aside telegraphic match between the above clubs was concluded on Saturday evening when 15 of the 20 games wsre completed. An endeavour is being made to dispose of the five outstanding games by arbitration. The Wellington team will probably be returned winners as they have a pronounced lead at present and arc not likely to bo displaced hv i the "washing up" of the unfinished I games.
