CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
BRICK, LIME AND CEMENT WORKERS. SATISFAiCTOiRY AGK-SEMENT ARRANGED. The above section of the Auckland general labourers' dispute was considered by a Council of Conciliation and completed this morning. The Commissioner, Mr. P. Hally, presided. The assessors for the union of workers were: Messrs. J. Sutherland, F. Bellingham, and W. Duncan, while the employers were represented by Messrs. F. W. Wilson, W. P. Winstone, and W. A. Phillips, with Mr. S. E. Wright as agent. The application of the workers was for increased wages and an improvement in the working conditions The whole of the clauses in the dispute were adjusted to the satisfaction of the parties concerned, and were substantially on the lines of the present award, with the exception of wages, and it was agreed by the assessors that as from July 11, 1924, for permanent employees, the minimum rate shall be £4 per week, and for those employed casually 1/10 per hour, these rates to continue for a period of two years. At the conclusion of the meeting complimentary reference was made by those present to the manner in which Mr. Sutherland, secretary to the Labourers' Union had presented the case for the workers. During the past four months a number of disputes had been arranged without reference to the Court of Arbitration and this was attributed to Mr. Sutherland's tact and judgment, and in the opinion of the assessors present the compliment paid to Mr. Sutherland was well earned and thoroughly deserved.
