ADDED SAFEGUARDS. (By Telegraph.—Special to '-Star.") WELLINGTON', Thursday. New regulations have been issued with regard to the preparation and sale of food and drugs. A large number of ordinances hitherto in force have been revoked and more severe conditions and. penalties in the public interest substituted. The addition of preservative; to any article of food except in the case of special permission is prohibited. Flavouring and colouring matter are similarly dealt with- There are striugent regulations regarding the cleanliness of persons handling food, and in regard to possible contamination of food by ■'"carriers" of disease- Places where food ia prepared, sold, and stored, are to be governed by amending regulations in regard to lighting, ventilation, buildings, etc. Drinking vessels in hotels come undei new regulations regarding cleanliness and inspection. A standard is prescribe a of foods to be sold, explicit descriptions being given of specific foods such as flour, bread and meals, infants' and invalids' foods, malt extract, meat, fish, imported eggs, edible fats and oils, margarine, milk, cream, butter, cheese, tea, coffee, cocoa, vegetables, fruit, products, etc. Drugs must conform to descriptions and tests prescribed. Biological products such as anti-toxin or serum must state particulars of manufacture, source, date of manufacture, and date after which preparation should not be used.
