People residing .across the harbour ,nnd that the taxi stand in Quay Street iin front on the Kerry Building js jrather an obstacle in'the way 'of a sprint to catch a ferry steamer'at ths Mast moment. The Marine Borou-iw i Association last night laid a request before the. City Council that the taxi : stand either be removed entirely cir 'that the number of taxis permit ted t0 ,be on tlie stand be reduced from six jto four. It was also pointed out to the Council that the western footpath of I Queen Street is frequently blocked by vehicular trafiic at the Customs Street West crossing, when awaiting tha traffic constable's signal to move on edging across the line of the footpath! Further, the same body suggested a regular policing of the foot and vehicle traffic at the Quay Street crossing to the Ferry Buildings during busy hours. The Deputy-Alayor stated that tha I taxi stand had been decreased, and I there was now plenty of space for pedestrians to cross the street if they took the right line. The request was declined, and the other matters were referred to the Finance Committee for [consideration and report.
