BRITAIN IN EGYPT.
■' ZAGL-UL AND THE SUDAN. GREYS GREAT SPEECH. jjO VARIATION OF POLICY. (By Cable.—rress Association.—Copyright.) 3 (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 26. In the lions.' of Lords, the debate on tic Sudan question which whs raised by J I,ord Raglan, developed importantly I offing to a notable intervention by Lord s Grey of Fallodrn, wlio s-aid that'he de- t plored the fact that practically all of - 1 Earl Cromeb's splendid work of admin- c jstration in Egypt was gone or going. s Hβ hoped it would be impressed on r Zaghlul Paslm when he visits London \*' portly that the right of protecting and ! ' administering the Suez Canal would not j I pass to the Egyptian Government. We ! should equally make it clear we were fc not going t.j abandon an exceptionally ] fine work wu have done in the Sudan. % Egypt would iH'\cr have had a finger in the Sudan again but for us. 8 Lord Grey insisted thnt in the forth- ' coining negotiations the Government should make it. quite clear that the ( Egyptian Government had no say at all c in the question of the Sudan. The only A exception must ho the question of the ' Nile waters, which he acknowledged was c a case for a joint Egypto-Sudanese Com- ' mission. ' Lord Grey attributed the bold attitude ' ef Egypt aa rocards the Sudan to the • impression that we have been on the run m Egypt. He considered the ques- ( tions of Egypt, the Sudan, and Traq were ' interdependent, and earnestly urged the ' Government to give careful considera- ' iion to Iraq on military grounds. ' He prefaced his striking speech by the s statement that he did not know whether Jus views represented the Liberal party's ' views. ' Lord Parmoor said that the Govern- ! tnent did not intend soing back on the ' past British policy in Egypt. The AnjrloIraq Treaty, of which Lord Grey had ' expressed distaste, would be submitted to Parliament before ratification.— '(Renter.)
