Her steer-1 ing gear broke, and the vessel ran on to a rock. She broke in half and listed heavily. The accident happened near Te Maire, a few miles from Taumarunui. The passengers, 14 in number, and a crew of four landed safely. Tlie mail was recovered from the vessel. It is expected that the Waiti will be salved.
