MUD OR CONCRETE?

■ ■— ON NORTHERN" ROADS. At a meeting of "Wainui riding ratepayers, held at Silverdale on Tuesday, the county councillor, Mr. Burns, of Arkle's Bay, with the county assistant engineer, Mr. Page, explained tlie proposal to raise a road and bridge loan of £20,000, which it was expected would be subsidised by £15,000 or £20,000. It was proposed, he said, to divide the riding into four parts, namely, Whangaparaoa, Silverdale, Wainui aud Waiwera, and load each portion with one quarter of the loan. The list of desirable works totalled £.0,000. Mr. Burns said if they would progress they must borrow. I Mr. J. Moffatt said it was more important to spend wisely than to borrow. He had just been out valuing, and had had to assess property at half its proper value owing to the bad state iof the roads. Mr. Bridson inquired as to concrete reading, which he said would last 80 years, and discussion occurred as to concrete "ribbon" roading—laid with concrete slabs Cft by 2ft, with metal between. ' Mr. J. Moffatt said there seemed to be a movement afoot to make the Takapuna-Redvale road a main highway, and also the road from Warkworth to Waiwera. What about the gap between Waiwera and Redvale? Mr. Page said the County Council favoured leavinsr this out and diverting the road from Waiwera over to Wainui, Massey Road, Albany, and Birkenhead. i Mr. Burns thought the main highway would be through Albany, Dairy Flat, Massey Road, Wainui, Upper Waiwera, land Tokoroa.
