CLEANING OF SCHOOLS.
9 — SPECIAL GRANT OF f3OOO. {Bj Telesraph—Press Association.) WELUNGTON, Friday. Interviewed with regard to the alleged inadequacy of the sum allowed to school committees for the purpose of keeping schools clean, and for smaller expenses I incidental to sanitation, the Minister of Education stated to-day that a complaint had been made some time ago that in cases of larger schools the grant was not sufficient. As the result of an inves- j tigation by the Department a short time ! ago it was found that the grant waa ample in the case of the smaller schools, many of the committees having, in fact, considerable credit balances. He had, however, been impressed with the dis-'l abilities of some of the larger schools, and accordingly had referred the matter to the Prime Minister, with the result that Cabinet had made a special grant of £3000 to assist them, tho distribution to be left in the hands of the boards. The grant will be divided among the boards in proportion to population and average school attendance as followsAuckland, £900; Taranaki, £180; Wanca'- , nui, £240; Hawke's Bay, £215; Wellinc- ' ton, £340; Nelson, £120; Canterbury £500; Otago, £310; Southland, £195
