ATHLETICS.
G W H. Butler, of St. Stephen's Har-j riers Victoria, must be the tallest athlete j i„ Australia. He is 23 years of age lost | in weight, and stands 6ft (in. His latest: successes are the Victorian high jump, nnd weight-putting championships. The \merican Olympic Games track , team will be g-eatly strengthened by the j inclusion of C. W. Paddock, who was j suspended by the A.A.TJ. last summer! for running at a meeting in Paris without the consent of the American governin"- body. A few weeks ago requests to the A.A.I", were made by the National Collegiate Athletic Federation and the National Amateur Athletic Federation, and recently the Southern Pacific Association supported the request. The only obstacle, it was stated by the president of the A.A.U., in the way of the Californian sprinter's reinstatement was that a personal apology was needed from him for certain remarks he had made' derogatory to the dignity of tbe A.A I". officials. The I'nited States already; have some brilliant sprinters to call en for the games, and with Taddick available they would appear to be well-nigh unbeatable.
