CHILD'S SAD DEATH.
BURNED IN OPEN EIRE. HARD-HEARTED DRIVERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. An inquiry into the circumstances concerning the death of an infant two years old, named Alick John Smith, whose parents reside at Foxton, was held here this morning. The child followed an elder brother through a fence into a neighbour's backyard, where an open fira was burning. The child was put back through the fence, but returned while his brother was absent, fell into the fire, and was badly burned, death ensuing in tho hospital. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, that death was due to shock following extensive burns. He said the occurrence was a pure accident, but showed the need of careful supervision and care of young children. The coroner also commented on tbe action of motor car owners, one of whom wanted payment before driving the child to Palmerston Hospital, and another desired to have payment guaranteed.
