TEACHERS' SALARIES.

THE NEW SCALE,

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

PROTESTS.

Anomalies existing in the new scale of teachers' salaries formed the subject of a discussion at the quarterly meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute to-day.

A report presented to the meeting as the result of conferences of teachers' organisations showed the effect of the new scale of salaries. In the case of a 3A headmaster in the country, receiving a total of £373, the teacher would lose £47 annually by accepting a position as second assistant in a town school. Under the new scale, a second male assistant would lose £7 on going up to the graSs of first assistant, but the Department had compromised by. ruling that such teachers were not to be reduced. Female' assistants, going from grade 2 to grade 1 would not receive any increase. The report showed that associated teachers were better off than normal school teachers, since the former had fewer, pupils arid drew a larger salary. Under the old rules, a first male assistant received in four years a total basic salary of £1302, while under the new regulations he would receive £1224, a decrease of £78. Assistantships in such places as Hamilton were being filled by lower graded teachers than formerly. The district high school assistant teaching 21 to 30 pupils received the same salary as first assistant in a district high school of 121 to 150 pupils. After a discussion the following remits to the Dominion conference were carried:—

"That this branch emphatically prdteete against the decreased maxima of the salaries of senior male assistants under the new scale, in so much that these salaries have already suffered reductions."

"That this branch is not satisfied with the present salary scale, and still presses for further consideration of the HiltonKane scheme by the Department."
