DEVONPORT.

The fortnightly meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. T.. Lamoat) presided, "and- councillors present were:' Metiers. S. Luxford, J. Mays, S. Bond, J. Hielop. H. Aiaridge, W. Perry-Taylor, A. V. Fraer, and E. H. Little.

'.' "War Memorial.—Messrs. E. H. Little and E. Aldridge were delegated by the council to receive on behalf of the borough the formal custody of the bronze monument now erected in Marine Square. The War Memorial Committee reported that thU function would take-the form of, a social ■ gathering on Thursday night, when all matters in connection with the memorial would be finally dispatched.

Street Lights.—The North Devonport Katepayers' Association asked for additional. street:lights in Victoria Avenue and Queen Street. The Mayor stated that there were several applications from all over the borough for Increased lighting, and. this request would, receive consideration when the whole matter was reviewed at the allocation of the.annual estimates. Firemen's Injuries. — A compensation claim iroiri the relatives of the late deputy superintendent was referred to the borough •olicitors. North Devonport Drainage.—Tenders were received . for the drainage of the , Vauxhall merged area. The plans prepared by the" borough" engineer, Mr. AL T.\ Griffiths, provided for the -sewerage of about 35 acres between the old and new boundaries of the borough of Devonport, from the peak of the watershed falling eastward from Old Lake Road towards Bangltoto Channel. For'this purpose loan proposals -were recently approved. The engineer's plan dispenses with" street sewers, and all reticulation is arranged on the dividing lines between allotments, at an estimated ! saving of 40 per cent to the ratepayers, i The lowest tender of £ 3035, was accepted subject to the engineer's confirmation. Wayleave ' for Electricity Poles.—The ~ Mayor reported the i result of a conference ibetween representatives of Takapuna and Devonport boroughs.' . The question of route had been settled, but no agreement ,• was reached as to tenure. Takapuna was ; prepared to grant wayleave for flve years only, but seeing that the currency of Devonport's electricity loan was 36 years, the ODevonport representatives emphatically protested. It was decided, failing satisfactory settlement within a few days, to seek the assistance of the -Minister of Public Works in the matter.
