The Hon. and Mrs. C. J. Parr leave for the South by the express to-night. The Hon. G. J. Smith, M.L.C., of Christchurch, is an intending passenger for the South to-night. Messrs. Sutherland Ross (Dunedin) and J. Evans (Wellington) are returning to the South this evening. The Controller of Customs (Mr. G. Craig) left Wellington .on Tuesday for New Plymouth and Auckland. Mr. H. A. Bown, of \Vellington who has been on a short visit to Auckland, returns to the South to-night. Mr. G. R. Hogan, chief traffic inspector, returned from a seven weeks' visit to Australia by the Ulimaroa yesterday. Mr. A. W. , Perkins, manager of Dalgety and Co., leaves for Sydney by the Ulimaroa to-morrow. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Perkins. Messrs". W. E. A. Gill, of Wellington, and'C. L. Low, of London, arrived at Auckland by the Main Trunk express this morning. They Tare staying at the Grand Hotel. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, accompanied by their daughter, Mrs. 8.. B. Wood, who returned from Rotorua yesterday, leave by to-night's south-bound express. Mr. John G. Allan, M.A., who hae been studying at New College, Edinburgh, and lias returned to New Zealand, is to be licensed by the Presbytery of Wellington at St. John's Church in a fortnight's time. Messrs. C. J. Ward, L. R. Partridge, C. B. Norwood, and R. T. M. Edmonds have been appointed by the Wellington Industrial Association to attend the annual conference which is to be held at Auckland on June 12 and 13. Mr. C. D. Hurrey, world's travelling secretary for the* Student Christian Movement waa a passenger by the Ulimaroa, which arrived yesterdny. He will shortly visit the Southern University colleges, and will sail for America by the Makura on June 10. Mr. C. H. Backhouse has been appointed secretary of the National Dairy Association in place of Mr. T. C. Brash, who has been appointed secretary of the N.Z. Dairy Export Control Board, the appointment taking effect from July 1. Mr. T. Woodcock has been appointed assistant secretary. Mr. C. E. Armstrong, engineer, of the Public. Works Department, Gisborne, is to retire on superannuation, having completed over 40 years' service with the Department. Mr. Armstrong has been stationed at Gisborne for the past 22 3'eara, during which time many of the most important schemes of the district have been carried out under his supervision. Just prior to the departure of the Tofua on the trip to the islands which she has just completed an unfortunate accident occurred on board. A 71b hammer was beir.g used in the engine-room, when it glanced off the object being struck, and hit Second-engineer E. Mackley on the head, behind the ear. Mr. Mackley was unable "to take up his duties in consequence of the injury he received, and the boat was detained in the stream four hours until a substitute was obtained. j
