PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) LONDON", February 29. Yesterday H.M. King George conferred the honour of Knighthood on a number of gentlemen, who were' introduced into the King's presence by Lord Cromer, the Lord Chamberlain, the Hon. • Arthur Myers being one of those so honoured. His Majesty afterwards ■ conferred a number of medals and decorations, the Albert Medal awarded to the late Mr. Victor Hayward, being handed to Mr. Frank Hayward, his father, as next of kin. This Albert Medal was' awarded the late Mr. Victor Hayward for gallant conduct "on saving and endeavouring to save life while serving as a member of the Ross Sea party of the Shackleton trans-Antartic expedition of 1914-17." It will be recalled that Mr. Ernest Mill Joyce, ex-petty officer R.N., Mr. William Raymond Richards and Petty Officer Harry Erneet Wild (deceased) were also awarded the medal for services on this tragic expedition. Mr. F. W. Skeleey who has just been adopted as' a prospective Conservative candidate for Dewsbury, Yorks, was , in business in New Zealand prior to the war. He joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt, was invalided from Gallipoli and after served with the New Zealand Engineers in France until the Armistice. He is now a manufacturer in business in Ravensthbrpe. Mr. Alex. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, was the guest of Sir James Allen at a lunch at the British Empire Club yesterday. Rev. l>. G. Whitehead, warden of Selwyn College, Dunedin, is taking a post graduate course in the faculty of philosophy at Oxford University. Notice in the "Times" of a death which New Zealand papers are asked to copy is that of Major Herbert Freyberg, F.S.* Arc, F.SJ-, which took place on the 25th February at 8, Gray's Inn Square. A service was held yesterday at SS. Anselm and Cecilia Church, Kingsway, before the interment at Norwood CemeMessrs. L. W. and H. J. Holt, of Auckland intend doing the English provinces, Scotland and France before the Exhibition opens. On their arrival they went to stay with friends in Brighton. The Right Rev. the Bishop of Melanesia, whose recovered health we lately announced, hopes to leave for his diocese by the Ruahine, which sails on the 28th of this month. He will be accompanied by Mr Cyril Rawson, of St. Paul's ColiWe Burgh, and Mr. Alfred Butchart, •■ who' has completed his training at' St. Boniface College, Warminster.
