THE HENDERSON HOUSING LOAN.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Permit mc to say a few words Ire the report which appeared in the i "Star" re the meeting of Henderson [ ratepayers called to consider the atti- | tilde of the Town Board in striking a ' lid rate as security for the raising of a loan of £15,000 for the erection of ■ workers' homes. The report is absoi lutely incorrect in the statement that 1 "the general opinion of the meeting was I opposed to the proposal." As a matter of fact, there were only three who showed any active opposition at all. If iit was as reported, why did not someone move a resolution of protest? Simply I because they knew they had not a hope Jof carrying it. With regard to a referendum, the Government recognise on this particular matter it would be, as one man at the meeting very aptly pointed out, "playing with loaded ! dice," as the man for whom the scheme ■was intended would have no voice or vote in the matter, viz., the man who pays the rent. With regard to the ■ scheme itself we are working on prac- ! tically the same lines as the Waipukurau Borough Council, who have had the ■ scheme in operation for three years, and . are more than satisfied with it. They have built 28 houses to date, and the payments have been promptly made and not a single default. In conclusion, let :me say that I believe the ratepayers have sufficient confidence in the members !of the board to leave the matter in their hands, as, being large ratepayers themselves, they are not likely to go in for any scheme that is going to incur a , heavy liability on the ratepayers, and . incidentally themselves.—l am, etc. J B. HART, i Chairman Henderson Town Board.
