GRAFT IN AMERICA.
PAINFUL INVESTIGATIONS. MR. DAUGHERTY'S POSITION. WASHINGTON, March 13. Sensational disclosures were made at the opening of the Senate's investigation into the administration of the Department of Justice by Mr. H. M. Daugherty, the Attorney-General. The first witness was Miss Roxy Stinson, the divorced wife of Jeff Smith, a most intimate friend and associate of _Vlr. Daugherty, who last May committed suicide in Mr. Daugherty's apartment. He frequently presented her with many shares in oil stock, which he obtained without cost, and which she understood to-be part of joint donations to Smith and Daugherty. She further told of joint speculative accounts of Smith and Daugherty iv Western brokerage houses, aggregating several hundred thousand dollars, adding that Smith deposited with one broker 11,000 dollars for her benefit, but Daugherty had since Smith's death seized the account. The committee was in an uproar as Mr. Daugherty's counsel protested against the inclusion of this testimony. Senator Wheeler, livid with anger, replied: "T will take none of your abuse. This testimony will stand, and books and ledgers corroborating it will arrive to-morrow-."— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
