SUNDAY WORK.
j QUESTION OF OVERTIME. i UNION NONSUITED. Actions were entered by the Butchers' Union (Mr. Thompson) "at the Magistrate's Court yesterday against Douglas Reed (Mr. Selwyn "Mays) for the infliction of a penalty for an alleged breach of award. Evidence was given by the secretary to the union (Mr. Sill) that he saw an employee of defendant going to work on Sunday. ! Afterwards he saw .Mr. Reed, who said I that he paid the employee £4 10/ per I week, although the award rate was | only £4 8/, and he thought that the | extra 8/ would cover caring for the horse on Sunday. Mr. I". !_. 'Hunt S.M., remarked, "What had the union to growl at if \ defendant was paying more than the 1 award rate?" j Mr. Sill said the extra eight shillings was not shown as overtime pay. Mr. Mays said his client had arranged I wilh the man to look after the horse on j Sunday, aud for that paid him the j extra eight shillings. This occurred iv In week when there was a general holi- ■ day for Labour Day. The man worked la few hours on Labour Day and got paid I the award rate for it.
