BID FOR FREEDOM.
MAN BOLTS FROM CUSTODY. " REARRESTED BY DETECTIVE. A bid for freedom was made by an arrested man named -Arthur Paul Prison on Thursday, whilst he v. as be ng conducted, with Stanley George Gibbs, to the Central Police Station at Wellington by Detectives Walker and Sinclair. The. two men under arrest had been apprehended at. the Trcnthani racecourse during the afternoon, and charged with vagrancy, bavin. been caught allegedly conducting a game of chance on the course. The detective, had conducted the men as far as I.ambton station in the train, when suddenly, as they alighted with the guard. Poison broke away and made . oft' down the platf .riu. Detective Sinclair immediately made after him, and after a chase succeeded in overtaking him —not. however, before the would-be escapee had led him over a rough route and catered him an injured "shin." The runaway once more in s.fc custody, the two were put into a taxi and conducted straight to the pcliee station.
