BEACHES AND BATHS.

SWIMMING VERY POPULAR. INCREASED FACILITIES REQUIRED. With the facilities afforded by beaches and baths it would be surprising: indeed it swimming were not popular with Aucklanders, and it is therefore quite in order that all places where swimming may be indulged in should be freely patronised. That this excellent exercise is gaining in popularity is evident from the large crowds to be seen at the various baths at all hours, while beaches within easy reach of the city are patronised not only in the daytime but also in the evenings. At Devonport, adults and children may often be seen bathing las late as nine o'clock in the eveningThe arrival of summer is always welcomed by bathers, and with the school holidays then in full swing, large numbers of children are constantly invading the beaches. The Parnell, Shelly Beach and Tepid baths are in big demand, and the good work of the schools in teaching children to s»ini is reflected. It is quite apparent that the present facilities afforded by constructed swimming pools are inadequate to cope wit!) the demand made during the summer and realising this it is understood that the City Council will ere long consider the position and make extensive alterations to the present baths which will then afford increased accommodation Another matter that will receive attention is the providing of increased facilities for dressing and at present the ■ provisions are totally inadequate especially at what might be termed "rush" hours. The lighting of the baths is another item that needs attention and a flood light or two at the various baths would be appreciated and result in large numbers patronising the swimming pooh in the evenings.
