OBITUARY.
SIR WILLIAM TRELOAR. LONDON, September 7. The death is announced of Sir William ' P. Treloar, a former Lord Mayor of London, at the a;ic of SO.—(A. and N.Z.) [\ Sir William Purdie Trelonr (first baronet) was a London institution, not { . only because he was head of the great ; . firm of Treloar and Sons, of Ludzate j : Jiill, but because he was one of the jrreatest executive Lord Mayors of London, and one of the finest friends the i little children of London ever had. He | was born in London but his father and I his forefathers were, Cornish farmer-:. | ;He had very many distinctions. His I own country and the countries of other • people loaded him with honours, but it ' was his greatest distinction that he ■ made the lives of cripple children • brighter, and was a philanthropist whose 1 •'isine.AS aptitude allied to large gencrI osity and true piety made him one of 1 the most notable Englishmen of his 1 type. ■Sir William Treloar fought tuberculosis, for by his benefactions and the Treloar Cripples' Hospital he really succeeded in unnumbered cases in bringing sunshine into dull lives and in making the children useful citizens capable of self help. It ie computed that by his j initiation five or six thousand children Buffering wth tuberculosis reducible by i sur gery, have been actually cured and restored to excellent health. He wrote well. His "Lord Mayor* Diary" is excellent literature, and there arc "Wilkes and the City," "Ludgate Hill, Past and Present," "Prince of Palms." and other books. Sir William leaves no heir, and it is probable that much of his fortune will be bequeathed to charity.
