THE DAVIS CUP.

AUSTRALIANS ENTERTAINED. THE INTERNATIONAL TIE. (ttccelvcd 12.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 7. The Hon. Donald Mackinnon, Australian Trade Commissioner in the United States, gave a luncheon in honour of tlie Australian tennis players, which was attended by the American and Japanese teams. Prominent officials also attended. Mr. Mackinnon commented on the binding of the international tie due to the Davis Cup competitions, in which the finest possible sportsmanship was exhibited. Mr. Davis spoke in high praise ot Australia, which sent a team under great difficulties and made a ■wonderful showing under circumstances of most splendid sportmanship. Anderson and Richards, replying for their own teams, eulocised the sportmanship of each other. It was shortly after the luncheon that Hawkes, who had feared for his parents' safety in Yokohama, learned from a Melhourne Press dispatch of his father's death. Thiß probably is the cause of the cancellation of all plans made by the Australian team, the members of which depart by the first available boat to Australia.—(A. and X.Z. Cable.) TENNIS IN AUSTRALIA. NO AMERICAN TEAM. (Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Mr. W. T. Hicks (secretary of the Australian Lawn Tennis Association) has received a cable from the American tennis authorities regretting inability to send a team to Australia during the summer.— (A. and X.Z. Cable.) Australia had written to the lawn tennis associations of England, France, United States, and Japan asking them to send teams to Australia during the forthcoming season. It is not likely that Japan will send a team, as she is suffering so greatly from the earthquake.
