CABLE CHARGES.
WXBELEM OPPOSITION. " REDUCTION PREDICTED. Early opposition to the cable companies', which.would result in a reduction of rates, was predicted by Mr. ■ E. : T.; Fiek, ■of Amalgamated Wireless, Limited, at the annual .meeting of the Sydney Chamber ■of Commerce last week. . , Hβ said that Australia was. not getting a reduction-of; cable-, charges because ..there were no competing wireless service*. Wireless communication would, however, be established shortly, and for the first time for 26 years the cable companies' would'have opposition. This would result in the charges being reduced by ;one-thifd.-"Tbe ' argument 'of the PostmasterGeneral," said-Mr. J. M. Paxton, "that, becauee the cost of week-end and deferred messages has reduced below those provided for. in an agreement between the.Government and the Eastern Extension Cable Company, there is no necessity ness messages, is only another instance to lower the charges for. ordinary busiof the utterly unbusinesslike and unsympathetic attitude of the department to- things-vital to the~ well-being of the community."
