BREACH OF PROMISE.
TOO YOUNG TO MARRY. PARENTS INTERVENE. LONDON, July 25. "We have decided our son is too young to marry," wrote a Frenchman's parents to liia fiancee after a four years' engagement.
The faithless lover airily added, "I bow to the wish of my parents. Adieu; be happy." In the Court proceedings that followed this correspondence £700 damages was awarded the girl against the parents. This is the first time that damages for breach of promise have been awarded in France, except in cases of seduction, which in this case did not arise. The judgment was based on an article in the Civil Code to the effect "that those causing damages to others are held responsible for reparations." This establishes the responsibility of French ents in-respect to promises of marriage, and safeguards the dignity and material interests of marriageable girls The Court pointed out that an unjustifiable breach would prejudice the girl's chances of another marriage, and condemned the parents for not studying the character of the proposed danghter-in-law before consenting. r
