CHILIAN NITHATES.
ADVANTAGE OF DIRECT TRADE. (By Telesr-ph-Special to "Star";. WELLINGTON, this day. A cargo of nearly 400 tons of Chilian nitrate of soda has been received direct in Wellington from Chile by the Chinese | steamer Ling Nam. This is believed to be the first time that a parcel of nitrate of such dimensions has been received In Xew Zealand directly from the country of origin. Hitherto all nitrate of soda has been imported in small lots through | other countries. The quantity landing from l the Ling Nam is equivalent to one year's requirements of New Zealand. Advantage .was taken' by importers of the new service inaugurated by the Ling Nam connecting New Zealand .with Chile to import nitrate from the country of origin. It is quoted at £23 per ton, ■but that by the Ling Nam is being sold at less. It is required for chemical manufactures and for farm and garden fertilising purposes. The shipment is an instance of the great advantage New Zealand would enjoy in having direct communication with foreign countries, so avoiding costs of transhipment in Great Britain or Australia.
