SAFETY IN MINES.
EXPERIMENTAL EXPLOSION. VALUABLE LESSON. LONDOr. July 23. The Government experimental station at Eskmcals, Cumberland, has carried out a remarkable series of explosions of coal dust in the course of researches into factors making for safety in mines. The conditions approximated to those of an actual coalmine explosion, in which hundreds of lives were lost. A gallery 750 ft long was strewn with coal dust. The gas was ignited, and a flash of flame like lightning rushed through the gallery. It was followed by a cloud of dense black smoke and deadly coal gag. Pitprops and other colliery equipment were hurled a great distance. Later the mine was cleared by special fane. The experiment showed the benefit of mixing stone dust with coal dust to reduce the strength of the explosion.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
