MUTUAL AID SOCIETY.. ' An enjoyable social gathering -was held in St. Matthew's Hall on Wednesday evening by members of Smith and Caughey's staff and their friends, the occasion being the thirteenth annual meeting of the S. and C, Ltd., Mutual Aid Society. The adoption of the report and balance sheet was moved by Mr. P. Cleveland, and seconded by Mr. D. B. Coates. The report showed that the membership of the society was now 289, an increase of 7 since last year. During the preceding twelve months 155 cases had come before the executive for consideration, and the sum of £43G 0/0 had been disbursed in assisting sick members, making a total of £3535 paid out to members during- the thirteen years of the society's existence. The payment of this large sum had been made possible by the firm's generous contribution of f 1 for every £1 paid in members' subscriptions. The firm also allows interest on money deposited by the society. These sources of revenue are further augmented by the interest from the sum of £1000 set aside by the directors of Smith and Caughey | Ltd., as a peace memorial in honour of the men who fell at the late war. Especially during the summer months, members availed themselves of the facilities for restful change afforded by "Rest Holme," the cottage at St. Helier'a Bay given by Mr. A. C. Caughey for the use of members of the society. Votes of appreciation to the directors and to the retiring members of the executive were carried by acclamation. The following officers were elected:—Patrons, Mrs. W. H. Smith. Messrs. A. C. Caughey. J. Marsden Caughey and H. P. Caughey; trustees, Miss K. Burton, Messrs. W. Astley and T.
